All pulling together: Wuppertal as a model of cohesion, cooperation and economic efficiency

With 365,902 inhabitants (2024), Wuppertal is by far the largest city in the western German Bergisches Land. In the seventh century, Germanic tribes first settled in the Wupper valley, and around the year 1000, the first documented settlement existed. In 1929, the city of Barmen-Elberfeld was formed by merging Barmen, Elberfeld (the location of our private detective agency), Ronsdorf, Cronenberg and Vohwinkel, along with several smaller communities. A year later, a survey among the residents led to the current name Wuppertal, as the inhabitants wanted to establish a connection to the Wupper, which flows for over 20 km through the city.

Wuppertal is especially known nationwide for the Schwebebahn, its zoo, the swimming opera, the clock museum and the Historic Centre with the opera house. Nevertheless, even in the relatively quiet Schwebebahn city, there are criminal subjects and morally reprehensible individuals (for example, adulterous spouses), who are regularly exposed by our detectives in Wuppertal, whether in personal matters such as custody and maintenance, or in internal company suspicions such as expense manipulation or sick leave abuse.

The Schwebebahn is the landmark of the city. Since 2014 at the latest, there have even been serious political considerations to give Wuppertal the official nickname "Schwebebahn City".

Up and down in Wuppertal: geologically and economically

Due to its elevation differences—from 101 metres above sea level as the lowest point to 350 metres above sea level as the highest—and the associated steep streets and staircases, Wuppertal was referred to by director Tom Tykwer (among others, Run Lola Run, Perfume) as the "San Francisco of Germany". The city has the most public staircases in Germany, 469 in total, of which 23 are listed. Overall, Wuppertal is a city with many listed buildings, including villas and residential houses—even from the Gründerzeit period—most of which date from the 19th century. Approximately 4,500 of these buildings are protected as historic monuments. This architecture, combined with the green surroundings, makes Wuppertal a popular filming location for cinema and television productions. Since 1901, over 60 films and several documentaries have been shot in Wuppertal and its surroundings. The film industry regularly requires not only security personnel, primarily bodyguards, but also our private detectives in Wuppertal.

Economically, Wuppertal is home to a solid number of significant companies, some operating globally, most of them in industry, for example: Bayer AG originating from Barmen, the insurance companies Barmer GEK and Barmenia, several tool manufacturers such as Johann Hermann Picard and KNIPEX, as well as various banks, car parts suppliers (including Schaeffler) and carpet manufacturers. Nevertheless, the city’s finances are poor, and the budget deficit is enormous. Our corporate detective agency in Wuppertal is available to local companies both for investigating economic crimes committed by third parties and for checking suspicious employees. In addition, we provide investigative and preventive services to secure your company premises or office building, including detecting bugging devices (counter-surveillance), IT forensic analyses and IT security measures, as well as burglary protection against "classic" break-ins.

The numerous Gründerzeit buildings in Wuppertal testify to a golden past of the current districts, yet despite a strong and diversified corporate structure, Wuppertal is now heavily in debt.
